Our one-for-all identity ‘Aadhaar’ has become more secure now. UIDAI has introduced a security featureto enable people to lock/unlock their Aadhar card online. With this, no other third party can either read or access any of your personal details from the UIDAI server.

More than a Billion people have been issued Aadhaar numbers (UID) each having unique combination of 12-digits. The UID (Unique Identification Number) corresponds to your personal biometric and demographic details like your name, father’s name, date of birth, mobile number, address and biometric details viz., your iris scan, fingerprints and your photograph. Since all these information are stored online, it is essential to safeguard them from 3rd party to protect the privacy of the Aadhar card holder. Thus, UIDAI has come ahead with a much needed and vital feature which will enable the Aadhar card holder to lock or unlock his/her Aadhar card online.

When you get your Aadhar card, you also give the government your retinal scan and fingerprint data, which refers to Biometric Data. This data can be used for Aadhar verification, which means (for instance) when you submit your Aadhar card as a proof of identity to get a SIM card or at any other required place, you can use your fingerprint to allow the telecom company to access your identity information. By this, it can quickly authenticate the ID, speeding up the things like KYC verification.

However, misuse of Aadhar biometric authentication has been claimed where people who haven’t used their Aadhar card for a while have received an email from UIDAI stating that their data has been accessed via biometric authentication. This is really something to worry. This can be prevented now if you lock your biometric information stored on UIDAI’s servers, which would mean that no one can access your details until you unlock your biometric.
